The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship (LExS) is a prestigious program designed to attract outstanding students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) to pursue full-time Master's degree programs at Leiden University in the Netherlands. This scholarship is also available to students of all nationalities enrolling in specific advanced programs.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Non-EEA/EFTA Students: Applicants must be non-EEA/EFTA nationals enrolling in a full-time Master's program at Leiden University. All Master's programs are eligible, except for the LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School Leiden University.
- Academic Excellence: Candidates should have achieved excellent academic results in their previous studies, relevant to the Master's program they intend to pursue. Typically, this means being among the top 10% of graduates in their previous degree program Y-Axis.
Scholarship Benefits:
The LExS offers three levels of awards:
- β¬10,000 towards the tuition fee.
- β¬15,000 towards the tuition fee.
- A full tuition fee waiver, excluding the statutory tuition fee International Scholarships.
Please note that the LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA/EFTA recipients must still provide proof of sufficient funds for their student visa or residence permit application
Application Process:
- Apply for Admission: Submit an online application for admission to a Master's program at Leiden University. Ensure you meet the specific admission requirements for your chosen program Leiden University.
- Access Scholarship Application: After applying for admission, you can apply for the LExS through the university's online application system. The scholarship application form will be available in the 'Scholarships' section of your application portal.
- Submit Required Documents: Along with the scholarship application, you may need to provide additional documents, such as:
- A motivation letter.
- Letters of recommendation.
- Proof of academic excellence (e.g., transcripts, diplomas).

Selection Process:
The selection of scholarship recipients is based on academic merit and the relevance of previous studies to the chosen Master's program. Applicants will be notified of the scholarship decision by the end of April for programs starting in September, and by the end of November for programs starting in February
